Edge services have the potential to offer lower latency to end users and more efficient use of computing and networking resources. Creating an edge service requires expertise in a wide variety of technologies, from mobile networks, to sensors, robotics, cloud computing, and AI. This complexity can be a significant barrier for people who want to create a new service. The Edge Service Enabling Platform, or ESPF, is an open-source effort to support the creation and operation of edge services by allowing designers, operators, and infrastructure developers to collaborate, and by simplifying each contributor's view of the edge service by leveraging the expertise of the other contributors. This talk describes the first steps towards building the platform, specifically our efforts over the past year to improve the tooling available for edge service design to move towards our vision of a collaborative, modular approach.
